Omakase is the ultimate Japanese dining experience that features the chef combining his culinary and creative skills to present personalized meals and delicacies. The term translates to “I leave it up to you”, which essentially puts all power and control into the hands of the chef. Omakase is a culinary tradition highly respected in Japan, featuring the highest quality fish ingredients for all to enjoy.

Not many people are aware of Omakase’s historical background. This high-end culinary tradition dates back centuries to Japan’s Edo period, which took place between 1603 and 1868. Similar to today’s structure, Japanese chefs showcased their culinary and creativity skills through the textures and flavors of high-quality fish and natural ingredients. Omakase has evolved over time by including other dishes besides sushi, like sashimi, tempura, and more. Today, Omakase is one of the world’s finest and most popular dining experiences, comprising 10-20 courses. Despite evolving, the Japanese roots are still very much alive!

The Preparation of Omakase

Not only is Omakase a dining experience, it’s art! Chefs must be skilled and understand Japanese tradition and gastronomy to perfect the craft. Chefs make the Omakase dishes stand out by utilizing and incorporating specialty ingredients that are unique and usually seasonal. They carefully select the freshest seafood, vegetables, and other ingredients, which are then prepared through traditional Japanese techniques. The techniques include grilling, steaming, and frying to strengthen the ingredients included. Aside from magnificent taste, chefs take pride in preparing a remarkable display of Omakase. Creativity is used again to showcase each Omakase dish's eye candy through great detail. The main goal for chefs is to create a memorable experience through great taste and an elegant display.
